Description
Antique primitive hand-carved wooden tail for a child's rocking or gliding horse. This is quite possibly a 'one of a kind' piece of early to mid 1800's American folk art. In good condition overall relative to its age with only a few minor nicks or dings. The craftsman had an attention to detail and an eye for proportion. Type of wood is unknown but possesses a deep rich patina. Found at a collector's estate where numerous 19th Century primitive rocking / gliding horses were up for sale. Commonly these early wooden rocking horses possessed a mane and tail made from real horse hair, which did not stand the test of time, requiring replacement at some point in their history. This exquisite hand-carved tail is believed to be an example of one such replacement. This folk art piece is a testament to early American ingenuity and craftsmanship.
